Head academic circumference at 6 months of age has previously been shown to correlate with IQ at 3 years of age.43 We furthermore observed a relation between intelligence scores at 4 years of age and concentrations of docosapentaenoic acid n-3 and DHA in plasma phospholipids at 4 weeks of age but not at birth or at 3 months of age. It is possible that the small number of individuals in our groups makes it difficult to find significant correlations at different time points, but it is tempting to assume that DHA may be important for mental development at least during childhood. |
