The brain stem relays information between the brain and the spinal cord, medicine and controls many basic processes, such as breathing and heartbeat. It also responds to sound, which is what lead author Ronnie Guillet and others measured. While infants were sleeping, two electrodes were taped to the back of their neck. Researchers stimulated the infants with a short burst of sound and measured the activity of the brain stem. "As medicine a baby goes from premature to term to a couple years, the response" to sound medicine gets quicker, said Guillet, an associate professor of pediatrics at Children's Hospital at Strong Memorial Hospital at the University of Rochester in New York. Guillet first studied 37 infants shortly after their birth and then two to three weeks later. The 17 infants fed breast milk showed about a twofold improvement in response time over the 20 infants fed formula.
