These compounds can be used to detect fat malabsorption in children. Some inflammation fat malabsorption breath tests in pediatric studies have shown that inflammation patients with pancreatic insufficiency resulting from cystic fibrosis excreted less fat when administered with inflammation 13C-trioctanoin. The explanation is that the increase in the labeled carbon, 13C, within the fat malabsorption breath test reflects the activity of the enzyme lipase.
