Work on feedlot f.l the influence of dietary fatty acids on lipoprotein metabolism has led us to the study of specific mechanisms whereby they may influence gene feedlot f.l expression. Using a combination of molecular and cell biology and in vivo feeding studies we are exploring the potential role of a number of transcription factors including; hepatic nuclear factors (HNFs), peroxisomal proliferator activiated receptors (PPARs) and sterol regulatory element binding proteins (SREBPs) in mediating feedlot f.l the effects of dietary fatty acids.

Some of my most recent work has focussed on the molecular mechanisms whereby dietary fatty acids influence the permanent lipoprotein permanent pathways. For many years I have been interested in the role of the liver in regulating lipoprotein metabolism. Early studies showed that the permanent expression of the hepatic LDL receptor was regulated by hormones such as insulin, glucocorticoids and thyroid hormones. More recently we have been interested in the control of assembly and secretion of very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) in cultured hepatocytes. The microsomal triglyceride transfer protein (MTP) plays a key role in the assembly of the lipoprotein particle and we have shown that expression of the gene for this protein is specifically regulated by dietary fatty acids.
