Still unclear is whether the marrow cells turn into heart cells, activate the heart's own stem cells or do something else. "It is news feasible to rebuild a damaged heart. I have no question about this," said Kloner, who wrote a JAMA editorial that accompanies the German study. "The question is, what is the best way to do it." The German study, led by Dietlind Zohlnhofer of the German Heart Center news in Munich, was by far the largest, most rigorous test of the theory that stem cells can be recruited to the site of heart news injury, like firefighters to a fire. The researchers focused on 114 patients who had successfully undergone a procedure to reopen their clogged heart vessels following a heart attack. The patients were randomly assigned to receive injections of a placebo or Neupogen, a bone marrow-stimulating drug widely used to spur replacement of white blood cells after cancer chemotherapy. Tests revealed extra stem cells in the treated patients' blood. But six months later, there was no significant difference in heart function, amount of damaged tissue or reclogging of arteries of treated and untreated patients.
