By 7:30, I'd had coffee, read the newspaper and weeded the garden. A month ago, the dog and I took an evening walk at milwaukee sunset. He was milwaukee overdressed in his fur, but I was just right in a T-shirt and shorts. After five months milwaukee of gorgeous Midwestern weather, low humidity and scarce mosquitoes, I had convinced myself that I would not have to write about, or deal with, winter blues this year. But these last few weeks, I've craved, made and eaten batches of cookies and felt exhausted at 7 p.m. This morning, I slept through 2 alarms. As sure as Christmas decorations deck department stores in mid-October, our daylight is shrinking to a few cold and cloudy hours. This all builds to the annual wink of daylight, Dec. 21, the winter solstice. "I kind of like the shortest day of the year," said my mom. "Psychologically, I know that tomorrow there will be a little more light than there was on the shortest day."
