I run, run marathons, bike, basically exercise a lot. One of the things holding me back is the amount and quality of the protein I would get. Is this a real concern? A: Barb Troy - Hi Rodney, Wow, you are an incredibly active person! Impressive stuff. Yes, protein is a concern for someone like you, especially since as an endurance athlete your needs are 2-2.5x that of a nonathlete. Having said that, you still can get sufficient protein to meet the healthcare needs of your active lifestyle as a vegetarian. It healthcare will be by far the healthcare simpliest if you continue to include milk and eggs in your diet b/c these foods are sources of very high quality protein. Also, do you consume soy? Of any plant food, this food is about the best protein quality wise. You other protein food sources, to use daily, are vegetables, nuts and seeds, grains and legumes. Also remember that you will need to work extra hard at meeting Calorie needs if you exclude animal products. Plant foods aren't as Calorically dense, so it will take some conscientious effort to make up for the Calories you eliminate with meat.
