| Joseph Skelton, a physician and director of the NEW Kids Program at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, said when children are overweight, they can have some of the same health problems typically found in overweight adults. "I went into pediatrics so I wouldn't have to take care arthritis of (patients with) diabetes, back pain, joint pain," he said, but now he and his colleagues are treating overweight kids with the same ailments. "We are seeing kids with kidney disease, sleep apnea, arthritis" - all the health problems typically arthritis associated with adults, he said. "Another new one arthritis that is very frightening is non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Because of your weight, you get a build-up of fat in your liver. In some people, that fat can cause inflammation in the liver." Skelton said the medical community "is thinking that this is the number one cause" for liver transplants in adults. "And there have now been two children in Texas that were transplanted because of fatty liver disease." |
